The movement originated in Monaco in 1991 with the founding of the very first Amitié Sans Frontières club. This club, inspired by the Anglo-Saxon model known as ‘service clubs’, brings members together around humanist values and community-based initiatives.
In 1996, to support the movement’s growth, the association Amitié Sans Frontières Internationale was officially established by a Monegasque ministerial decree.
It then becomes the coordinating body for the global network, ensuring its coherence, development and institutional anchoring.
In the same year, ASF Italia was founded, comprising several of its clubs, and shortly afterwards, many other countries followed suit.
This pivotal role was further consolidated a few years later, in 2003, when the association was granted consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This international recognition reflects the association’s ongoing commitment to solidarity, peace and dialogue between peoples. It also bears witness to the network’s significant contribution to major human and social issues around the world.
Thanks to this status, Amitié Sans Frontières Internationale will play an active role in the work of the United Nations, giving a voice to civil society and thereby strengthening its efforts in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
The association is looking forward to a promising future under the leadership of a new, dynamic and committed team, chaired by Countess Valérie Von Bredow, the great-grandniece of the German Chancellor Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck-Schönhausen.
We want to build a relationship of trust with you. By supporting our cause, you are not only contributing to a humanitarian mission, but also to a collective endeavour where every action counts.
We develop sustainable and measurable projects; every initiative is designed with the long term in mind, and its results are systematically evaluated. Our priority is to ensure rigorous management and to honour our commitments to our partners and donors. We are guided by three founding principles.
Every project we undertake is carefully assessed; we select initiatives that meet the real needs of communities and have a proven track record of effectiveness. As responsible managers, we form partnerships with organisations recognised for their expertise and reliability.
As an organisation, we believe it is essential that every donor is kept informed about how their contribution is being used. We make it a point of honour to publish detailed reports on our website regarding how funds are allocated, so that everyone can follow the progress of the projects we support. Your generosity deserves full transparency. Through transparent monitoring, you will be regularly informed of the progress of our projects. Reports, testimonials, photos, features and updates will be posted on the website to ensure that your support is having the desired impact.
We are fully aware of the challenges involved in humanitarian projects. That is why we are committed to developing realistic initiatives that are tailored to local contexts and designed to be sustainable. Each project is preceded by a thorough assessment to ensure that it can be implemented effectively and have a long-term impact.
ASFI is also a member of the Monaco Humanitarian Collective, a flagship initiative in the field of international cooperation launched in 2008 at the instigation of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.
The Monaco Humanitarian Collective brings together 17 Monegasque NGOs and three French partner organisations, all committed to a shared mission: to provide seriously ill children, mainly from developing countries, with access to specialist surgical care, particularly in the fields of cardiology and orthopaedics.
Through this partnership, ASFI is taking part in a well-established charity programme that tangibly embodies the values of humanity and mutual support championed by the Principality and shared by the entire Amitié Sans Frontières network.
Against a backdrop of increasingly complex humanitarian challenges, our new team aims to create a strong momentum based on three fundamental principles: credibility, feasibility and transparency. The Amitié Sans Frontières associations, whether based in countries, cities or regions, are all part of the same overarching project.
ASFI aligns its international activities with the key priorities set by the United Nations. These cover the full range of sustainable development issues, such as climate, biodiversity, energy, poverty, agriculture, education and water. In 2025, our focus will be on universal and equitable access to safe drinking water, promoting the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Friendship without borders is a form of solidarity that transcends geographical, cultural and human boundaries. Friendship and solidarity know no limits; they extend beyond distances and differences to unite people. The ASF network of associations is founded on this vision of global brotherhood, where mutual support and sharing are the core values that guide us in our daily lives. Friendship without borders is our strength; it fuels every project, every action, every encounter. We believe that sometimes all it takes is a gesture from the heart, a caring glance or a helping hand to transform lives.
